GAUZE should be kept in mouth for 1 hour and then removed. Do not use a straw.

NO RINSING or SPITTING today. On the 2nd day, rinse mouth gently after meals using 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a 8 oz. glass of warm water (if you are permitted to use salt).

BLEEDING - Slight bleeding is expected. If prolonged or excessive, place a clean gauze pad on the bleeding surface and bite down firmly for 30 minutes. Change gauze after that and repeat if necessary. No rinsing, no hot liquids or exertion until bleeding stops. See the FAQ for prolonged bleeding.

SWELLING is not unusual and may occur. Apply ice bag 15 minutes on, and then 15 minutes off, following surgery, for first 24 hours. The earlier this is started the more effective it will be. After 48 hours, apply heat.

PAIN varies with each patient. Take prescribed medicines as directed. Keep all medications out of the reach of children.

DIET - Soft foods are advisable for 24 hours. Do not chew on or near the wound or rinse the mouth until bleeding has stopped.

REST AND CARE are very important. The most rapid healing occurs in a mouth which is kept clean; after day 2, rinse after meals and brush teeth, avoiding the wound.

SMOKING should be curtailed for at least a day or more.

THE ARM may develop a black and blue mark following intravenous anesthesia. If pain continues, call the office.

DRIVING and operation of mechanical equipment is prohibited after a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation for 24 hours or if you are taking narcotic pain medications.
